Bloodtransfusionusinganimalbloodstartedihturybutwasunsuccessfulbecauseofbloodgroupinpatibilityaions。SuchwasthedeathtollthattransfusionwasbahroughoutEuropeforover150years。Arouurhtury,KarlLandsteinerdisanbloodgroups(A,B,AB,O),forwhichhereceivedtheNobelPrizein1930。Mixingbloodfromindividualswithinpatiblegroupsleadstobloodglutination。Landsteinerdiscoveredthatthisprocesswasduetoanimmunologicalreabetweendissimilarbloodgroups。Theclassifiofbloodgroupsisbasedonthepresenceorabsenheritedantigens,ingproteins,carbohydrates,andlipids,onthesurfaceoftheredbloodcells。Ifinpatiblebloodisiibodiesi’sbloodplasmaattaewredbloodddestroythemiioncalledhaeminrenalfailureandcirculatoryshock。Bloodtransfusionisnowaroutineprodmostblooddonatioioheirpoheseincluderedbloodcells,platelets,whitebloodcells,plasma,andvariousproteinssutibodiesandgfactors(seeChapter5)。Seleposallowforspeeios,auseofaunitofblood。Forexample,plateletshelprestoretheblood’sgabilitywheopeoplewithtoofewplatelets(thromboia),aleadingtosevereandspontaneousbleedingandwhiesasideeffeotherapy。Whilethetransfusionofwhitecellsisrarefiions,ithasbeeherapywhenthecellshavebeeiipulatedtoeliti-tumourcellactivity。
